Peek of the Week for Jan.5-8
Happy New Year!
Welcome back to a new year in Second Grade.
Bible verse for the week: Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world.”
Spelling Words for the Week: rang, sang, thing, bring, swinging, strong, along, swung, stung, thank, blank, blanket, sink, twinkle, honk, dunk, trunk, they, their, there
*NEW THIS WEEK – This week we will begin having vocabulary words on our spelling tests. Students must spell the vocabulary words and write the definition. I will not count off for spelling in the definition, but it must be spelled well enough that I can understand the definition. Perhaps this would be a good time to
write the vocabulary words every night with the definitions.
*avoid: to stay away from
*dwell: to live in a place
*honest: truthful
Reading: Our story this week is: “How I Spent My Summer Vacation”. Genre: fantasy
Vocabulary Words:
1. captured – to take control over
2. imagination – the ability to think of things that aren’t real
3. manners – a polite way to behave
4. matador – bullfighter
5. plains – flat open areas of land
6. relax – to have fun doing very little
7. vacation – time off from work or school
Math: We will continue with Ch 6, subtraction with and without regrouping.
Timed tests: 25 problems, differences of 4, 2 minutes
Cursive handwriting: We will begin cursive this week. Students will learn the correct formation in class and complete one side of the worksheet. For homework, they will complete the back side. As teachers, we will try our best to make marks or notes on the front of the worksheet. Please make sure you are watching your child as they complete the backside of the sheet. It is important that they are forming each letter correctly. As we will tell our students, beginning the first day of Third Grade, they MUST write everything in cursive with correct formation. While they are learning cursive and we do not count off for formation, they will in Third Grade so it is important they learn now.
Your child will beg you to write their name in cursive as soon as we start. We tell our students that as soon as we have finished all lower case letters they may write their name in cursive. Until that time, we will not allow them to write their name in cursive on papers at school.
Reminders and Requests:
*Students return to school on Tuesday, Jan. 5th.
*Friday, Jan. 15th is a conference day and student holiday.
*Monday, Jan. 18th is a school holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.
*Thank you for all the generous donations to the Sonshine Girls. They were able to give 50 women a homemade meal and gift bag. It was a huge blessing!
